The Nissan Altima and the Mitsubishi Eclipse, two cars that are simply not worthy of partaking in racing of any kind. A few poor souls however feel differently and because of this decided to release their inner Ricky Bobby and Cole Trickle to the world. The results, as you can imagine, were not good.

The temperature here in Northern, CA is supposed to hit an unseasonably hot 95 degrees this afternoon. That means old cars will over heat, people will go to the beach, and air conditioners throughout the region will be set on full blast. This is not a bad thing mind you, however it does make me think back to those snow filled days of winter when I lived in New York. Well, actually, the weather doesn’t make me think of that as much as the video you’re about to see does.

At this years 2012 Pikes Peak challenge in Colorado Springs, CO the Evolution Dynamics team of Driver Jeremy Foley and co-pilot Yuri Kouznetsov experienced one of the most harrowing crashes in motorsports history. While making their run up the mountain their Mitsubishi EVO lost traction through the corner known as “Devil’s Playground” sending them hurling off the cliffs edge and into one of the most violent crashes ever recorded. Both driver and co-pilot walked away from the crash relatively unscathed, which was a miracle after viewing the wreckage.

Avoiding an accident usually comes down to a combination of skill behind the wheel and a shitload of luck. Sprinkle in some bad weather and the odds of you getting out unscathed are pretty slim. Sometimes however the stars align and the Gods of traffic and goodwill smile upon you. Take the driver of this Mitsubishi EVO for example. While rolling along in some unsavory weather the driver comes across a pile-up thanks to some unseen black-ice. Never losing his head, he’s able to steer clear of the majority of the mayhem and limp away. Now, did he get away without any damage? Well no, but he did exhibit some great skills behind the wheel that kept he and his ride from getting completely waffled.

Unless you are unaware there are some inherent dangers with driving a performance vehicle. First off they sit a bit on the low side, second they’re visibility is generally not the greatest, and third, from a safety standpoint, they tend not to be the best. Case in point; the Mitsubishi 3000GT you see here. At first glance one would think that this accident resulted in a fatality, but surprisingly enough the owner walked away. The 2012 Volkswagen Golf R and 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution MR, would at first glance, seem like fierce rivals. I mean they both pack similar power; the EVO 291-hp and the Golf R 256-hp, however when it comes to price the EVO MR simply heads toward the stratosphere. For comparison, the Golf R is priced at around $37,000, whereas the EVO is around $45,000! That’s a huge number for any car, but whereas the Golf R’s price can be somewhat justified by a wonderful ride and stellar interior, the EVO MR is simply a junkie econo-box with a big engine and DCT gearbox. On the track though things change. You see this is where the EVO shines and the Golf R falls dead thanks to VW killing it with all the electronic nannies. Honestly, I’ve driven them both and if I were going to spend 35k on a new car, I’d go right to my Ford dealer and buy a 2013 Mustang GT with the track pack.
Sorry Volkswagen and Mitsubishi, but you still need to work a bit harder.

In the end, Mitsubishi’s storied Eclipse is being removed from life-support and sent into that good night not with a performance and handling package worthy of the name, but with a trim and content package designed to maximize value. The car that began its life racking up road racing trophies across the world is being retired with some paint, stitching and vinyl decals that make up the SE (“Special Edition”) package. Perhaps the ultimate in irony is that SE cars will only be offered with a four-speed automatic transmission, so don’t expect the cars to return either world class performance or even reasonable fuel economy. If you look at the numbers on the 2011 Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, they aren’t all that impressive. Sure, it’s got 237 horsepower, but it also weighs nearly 3,500 pounds and costs $30k by the time you add a few options. There are plenty of other amusing rides for even less money, so if all you’re doing is comparison shopping online, it’s easy to overlook the Lancer Ralliart. Drive one, on the other hand, and you won’t believe how good the car is, or how much better it feels than the numbers would indicate. Off-idle stumble in first gear aside, this car is seriously quick, with a rock-solid chassis capable of taking all you’re willing to dish out.
