The upcoming Porsche 918 Spyder has been the topic of debate for quite some time now and it’s not even on the road. The worlds first super car hybrid, the Spyder is said to pump out 887 hp and handle like no other road car that Porsche has ever built. Chris Harris of Youtube’s DRIVE Network recently had a chance (although a short one), to not only drive the new 918 Spyder, but do get up close and personal with the engineers behind it. Fast, fun and all-wheel drive. Those were the parameters that Chris Harris set forth when he put together this comparison test between the R8 V10 Plus, Porsche 911 Turbo S and a Litchfield GT-R. All are stock except for the GT-R which has been tuned to the likes of 750 hp. However, does all that extra power necessarily make it better than its German rivals? Harris recently put this trio through a gaggle of tests to find out exactly that!

Matt Farah and the guys from TUNED are back for another season of wild rides on Youtube’s DRIVE Network. For the season opener Matt ventures down to BBi Autosport to grab owner Joey Seely’s naturally aspirated 1985 Porsche 911 Carrera. With the lightest rotating assembly around, a wet-weight of just 2,100 lbs and 276 hp, this car promises to be one of the nastiest Porsche 911′s you’re ever likely to see.

We all know about shows like Top Gear, Fifth Gear and hell, even Fast N Loud. But there’s another automotive program that actually trumps every single one of them. It’s called Best Motoring and it’s featured only in Japan. The show pits super-cars against each other in no-holds-barred track battles that are truly epic. What you are about to see has been out for awhile, however once you hit the play button I think you’ll forget about that. Porsche is getting ready for its return to Le Mans in 2014. And it wants to remind you all that in 1971 it thoroughly and properly kicked ass. The monstrous 240-mile-an-hour 917 took first and second places, setting multiple records along the way. Oh, and 10 of the 13 cars that finished that year were Porsches.

In 1971 Porsche built the first magnesium-framed 917. The delicate birdcage of highly flammable and ultra-lightweight metal weighed just 42 kilograms, or 92 pounds. The frame was swathed in gossamer sheets of flowing fiberglass and perspex and given menacing tail fins. Then Porsche gingerly installed their latest creation: A magnesium and titanium air-cooled flat 12 good for more than 600 horsepower. The results were positively manic. Click through to see a highlight reel from the season, featuring the tarmac-swallowing, fire-breathing, time-warping 917.

The 917/30 variant could hit 62 mph in just 2.3 seconds and 124 in 5.3. It had a top speed of more than 240 mph. The comparable Ferrari of the day, the 512, had trouble breaking 200 mph.

In testing, driver Jackie Oliver did an average 155 mph per lap, the highest average speed ever recorded. The Martini Racing team went on to win Le Mans that year. Drivers Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep went 3,315 miles, a distance record, at an average speed of 155 mph, a speed record. The record remained untouched for decades.

A Porsche 917 in Gulf livery also took second place. Porsche 911s and even 907s took the majority of the other positions in the race. Only two Ferraris finished.

Helmuth Bott was the former director of Porsche’s research and development division and the man responsible for the iconic Porsche 959. This car was a new genesis for Porsche and was packed with more technology than any other car of its era. From its masterful four-wheel drive and sequential turbo systems, it has contributed more to Porsche’s evolution than any car produced before it. The Porsche 356 is one of those rare cars that has the ability to put a smile on the face of all those who view it. By today’s standards these cars are considered to be “cute”, but when first released back in the late 1940′s they were at the pinnacle of the performance envelope. This particular car is a 1962 Porsche 356 B Super cabriolet, and it’s one of the more striking cars we’ve come across. Finished in its original factory? Smyrna green paint over brown leather seats, visually the car is just stunning. It’s also one of the more documented 356′s out there. Having covered 125,000 miles and still retaining the original tool kit with Porsche-inscribed wrenches, this is a car that is sure to make a perfect addition to any Porsche collection.
