CON’s: Fuel economy, severe lack of traction, super stiff suspension in sport mode.

FINAL THOUGHT: I fear the 2013 Shelby GT500 is the last of the true muscle cars. Yes things must evolve (IRS rear, coil over suspension, etc..) but I’m glad Ford just said “F*CK IT” and built this thing anyway.

Balls, brawn and f*ck you; the three key ingredients that make up the 2013 Shelby GT500. Over the years Shelby Mustangs have gone through various configurations. When first released back in 1966, the GT 350 was a full-on performance car with a take-no-prisoners attitude and the grunt to back it up. However by the time the 1969-70 models came out, the trend had moved from full-on performance to more personal luxury. The same can be said for those models introduced from 2007 all the way up to 2010. Yes they were fast, and yes they had power, but in the end there was always something missing from the formula.

Enter the 2013 Shelby GT500, a car that grabbed some DNA from the original ’66 GT350 and then shot it up with an overdose of steroids thanks to the boys from SVT.

Having not only lived through the 1980′s, but being in high school during that time gives me the unique right to comment on anything and everything hair band related. You see I’ve seen them all. Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Poison, Gun’s and Rose’s and even these guys, White Lion. Now back in the day it was totally acceptable for guys in hair bands to have well… big hair. The best part about the whole ordeal though were the music videos on MTV. Sure they were cheesy, but every now and again you’d find a diamond in the ruff. Actually, that’s a lie… they all sucked, but this one from White Lion has a 1969 Shelby GT350 and a Lamborghini Countach so it can’t be all bad. Right?

It’s a 1966 Shelby Cobra replica that was built by a Father and his two sons more than 10 years ago. Its faded fiberglass shell is chipped and spider-webbed. The stainless trim is pitted and tarnished and the wheels are coated in a thick layer of brake dust. The carpet is also coming up and every now and then it blows flames from its side-pipes due to it running a little rich. Some may think these are problems. Me personally – I think it’s one of the coolest cars I’ve ever driven. This episode of “Big Muscle” is about the drive, those project cars that we work on, and the exhilaration we get when we wring them out for the first time on the open road. I honestly don’t think that people understand how powerful a 1,000 hp car really is. A Corvette ZR1 for example puts out 638 hp/604 lb-ft of torque. A Bugatti Veyron has 1,000 hp and has every techno and safety gadget known to man. So let me ask you – would you really want a Mustang with 1,000 hp? Don’t get me wrong, I’m not trying to slight the Mustang in any way, but I think that’s simply too much power. Carroll Shelby however disagrees. So much so that he’s now getting ready to launch the 2012 Shelby 1000. A car that in stock form will pump out approximately 950 hp, and in track mode over 1,100 hp. Oh, and the price for this… a cool $200,000. Personally, I’d go out an buy a Porsche GT3 RS with its meager 450 hp and call it a day.

It used to be that there was a time when the name Shelby actually meant something in the automotive world. I mean don’t get me wrong, it still does, but it pains me to see that old man Carroll is whoring his name out to anyone that will pay him. You see it’s come to my attention that Shelby has now made a deal with Felt Bicycles to produce a limited edition two-wheeled cruiser that supposedly “exudes the Shelby image and culture.” The bike is done up with Shelby’s signature blue and white paint scheme and while the bike is nice to look at, we would have preferred it if Shelby just stuck to making cars. The bikes will go on sale this month and will be priced at $999.00, so if you’re a true Shelby nut make sure to reserve yours today.

Barn find – it’s a phrase that those of us in the muscle car world know all too well. For guys like me stumbling across a barn find is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. You see sometimes classic cars are packed away by their original owners and or family members and forgotten about over time. These poor cars sit in storage facilities, old buildings and vacant garages until someone stumbles upon them and brings them back to life. Most of the time finding a car turns out to be a hoax, sort of like a big fish that gotta away story. Other times however lightening strikes, and when it does, it usually strikes big. Bill Fair has been an auctioneer for the last 40 years and has come across many different things in his time. He was however blown away when whilst cleaning out a storage facility he came upon a very rare 1966 Shelby GT 350 Mustang that was sold from Carroll Shelby’s personal car lot. The car was in near perfect condition, as it had been sitting for the last 26 years. Fair estimates the value of the rare Shelby to be around $200,000, a number which he hopes it’ll bring at auction.
