JCG Restorations and Customs

Tucked away in a small industrial park in Oxnard, CA sits JCG Restorations & Customs, a moderately sized shop that has built some of the best performing pro-touring cars that we’ve ever driven. Now generally we don’t focus in on shops, however when the owners of three of our best test cars start dropping names, we tend to listen. Originally we descended on JCG to drive Blu Balz, a stunning 1968 Camaro owned by one Karl Dunn. However since Mother Nature decided to water the Earth that day, we put our original plans on hold and got shop owner Cris Gonzalez to give us the in’s and out’s of what it takes to make a stellar pro-touring car.

How NOT to drive your classic Camaro.

Camaro Crash

If you were to restore a classic Chevrolet Camaro built between the years 1967-1969 to stock specifications, you’re most likely looking at between $35,000-$60,000. Change the plan to a full-on pro-touring car though and that price can jump from $60,000 to over $100k extremely quickly. That’s why it pains me so much when I see unnecessary carnage happen to beautiful cars simply because the driver is inexperienced.

eBay Deal of the Week: 1977 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28

1977 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Let’s face it, the Chevrolet Camaro’s built in the late 1970’s didn’t break any new ground as far as performance numbers went. They were big, heavy and came equipped with V8’s that were so choked by smog equipment that you had to ask yourself why GM actually released them in the first place. From a styling perspective I’m actually a bit sweet on these. A long raked hood, short deck-lid with duck-tail spoiler and orange metallic paint helped give the Camaro some high-style. Offered on eBay right now is this fully restored 1977 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 that, according to the seller has completed just 13,000 miles since new. This Z/28 came highly optioned with an automatic transmission, 350 cubic-inch V8, A/C, power windows and door locks, cruise control and an AM/FM stereo. In short, you’d be hard pressed to find one better so click through for more pics or check out the ad below.

For its season opener BIG MUSCLE hangs out with the Queen of Grip herself, Mary Pozzi. We traveled to Northern California to meet up with Mary, husband David and her highly modified LS2 powered 1971 Chevrolet Camaro. We talked racing, car set-up, touched on her SCCA autocross championships as well as her inclusion in Sony’s upcoming Gran Turismo 6. Then we took out her stunning prized Camaro for an all day flog in the California canyons.

Nitro Warriors Stop Motion

It seems like just yesterday when I was rolling around on my parents floor playing with my favorite Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars. These little die-cast buggers provided me with years of juvenile fun and helped lead me down my automotive path. “Nitro Warriors” is a short 2:35 stop motion film that was filmed entirely with an iPhone and an application called Stop Motion HD. It features a super-charged Ford Mustang against a rip-roaring Z06 Corvette. People, this is the stuff that childhood is made of. Click through and check it out.

2012 Chevy Camaro ZL1 vs. Mark Stielow’s Red Devil ’69

Mark Stielow Red Devil Camaro

If you’re name is Mark Stielow then it’s got to be nice knowing that you own the baddest ’69 Camaro on the block. Don’t believe me – how does 750 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque sound? Stielow is no stranger to the pro-touring world, in fact he’s kinda’ wrote the book on how to build a pro-touring 1st gen Camaro (and I mean that literally). Chevrolet though (the inventors of the Camaro) have just released their newest bad boy with the mighty ZL1. It makes 580 hp and has magnetically controlled suspension. So for kicks the guys over at Motor Trend decided to pit these two bow-tie brothers from different eras against each other in a no-holds-barred, winner take all shootout.

Chris Harrison on Cars

Youtube’s DRIVE Network has finally gotten its very own Chris Harris to jump on a plane, fly across the pond, and plop his ass down in some good ole’ American Muscle. The cars in question are the new 580 hp Camaro ZL1 and the stump pulling 671 hp Ford Shelby Mustang GT500. Both are wickedly fast brutes that would just assume pull a 20-minute smoke show as nudge the 200 mph mark on a closed circuit. But what about Chris Harris? What will this Brit who generally drives European super cars think of these two absurdly powerful ponies? Click through for the video and find out!

Musclecar

The following 3-minute and 30-second video is about muscle cars. It’s got great music, great editing and is also in Spanish, a language that I don’t speak or understand. However if you think that makes this video any less enjoyable, well then… you’d be sorely mistaken. You see muscle cars transcend language, race and political views creating a universal language that every car guy with a pulse can understand. Click through to check it out.
