Drifter Flip

I think Dire Straits put it best when they said, “Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes your the bug”. It happens to all of us at some point in time. We set out with the best of intentions but then somewhere along the way Murphy’s law kicks in and fucks it up for everybody. That’s exactly what happened to this drifter while he was entertaining a few track side spectators. When a entering a corner the driver caught a front wheel, thus sending him up and over onto his roof. Thankfully though there was a pillar of the community there with a camera phone that captured all the action. Good times for all those watching, bad times for the driver. But as they say, shit happens…

Matt Farah Judges the 24 Hours of Lemons

The Smoking Tire

A few years ago I got my first taste of the 24 Hours of Lemons when I raced a 1963 Chevrolet Corvair up in Staford Springs, CT. The car was arguably the worst thing I’ve ever driven, but in the end it had an engine that just wouldn’t quit. The following year we ran a 1979 Buick Regal with a 301 cubic-inch small block, however while the car was great, the engine simply wasn’t long for this world. If you’ve ever been a competitor in Lemons then you know that your fate, at some point, will wind up in the hands of the judges. These icons of the judicial system have the right to levy penalties for just about anything they wish, which means at days end, they can either make or break your team. Smoking Tire host Matt Farah recently had the chance to be a guest judge at Lemons where he had the opportunity to impart his vast array of knowledge and wisdom on the poor unsuspecting competitors.

Horrifying Cobra Crash Caught by GoPro.

Cobra Crash

Whether it’s mountain biking, hiking, fishing, carpentry or knitting, everyone has a hobby that keeps them grounded and on the straight and narrow. For me it’s running flat-out on a nice flowing road course in some type of automobile. It’s fun, therapeutic and is way more exciting then drugs or booze could ever be. With this hobby however comes an element of danger and risk that quite honestly I don’t really think about. Listen, at the end of the day we all do our best to take all the precautions we can to ensure that we don’t get maimed or killed. However there are those times when shit does actually happen, and when this occurs we just hope the outcome is not too severe. Take the driver of this modified Cobra replica for example. He’s roaring down the straight at 130 mph when something in the front suspension breaks and thus causes the car to spin out of control resulting in multiple barrel rolls. Thankfully the driver escaped with minor injuries, but man-o-man does this crash make you think about what can happen.

I guess in the end the cars license plate “?Z2BITE” wasn’t kidding…

Lamborghini Driver Wrecks – Stupidity to Blame

Posted in Best of, Crashes, FAIL, FAIL / Funny, General, Videos by MrAngry | January 14th, 2012 | 3 Responses |

Lamborghini Crash

It’s no secret that when a bunch of fast cars get together, regardless of the brand, that something bad will usually happen. For the most part drivers are respectful and use common sense, but unfortunately it only takes that one time when good judgement is overridden by ego and adrenaline. This is exactly what happened when a bunch of guys piloting Lamborghini’s got out of control on a public highway. What people tend to forget is that the majority of drivers are simply out on the road going about their daily routine and are not expecting a horde of super cars to come blazing by them at breakneck speeds. Combine that with the fact that these jokers were using all three lanes of traffic and well, the outcome wasn’t hard to predict.

Old vs New – Part II

1980 Ford Escort Mk2

Remember yesterday when I was talking about old vs. new? Well, Jalopnik recently posted this video comparing an old 1980 Ford Escort Mk. II rally car against a new, and thoroughly modern Ford Fiesta rally car. The results themselves are not surprising as the old Escort is no match for the Fiesta. What is interesting though are the impressions from the father and son driving team of Gwyndaf and Elfyn Evans. So, if you could choose, which one would you rather have in your garage?

2011 Oval Nationals – Cracks

Sprint Car Racing Oval Nationals 2011

They run sideways at 100 mph, weigh in at under 2,000 pounds and at days end can pack upwards of 800 hp. These are the Sprint cars that entertain fans at small raceways throughout the United States every Saturday night. Some people think that the sport of drifting is exciting, but for my money, I’ll take Sprint Car racing any day of the week. You see Sprint cars run an open wheel configuration and are constructed from the ground up to give the racer the best power to weight combination possible. They run at a constant 45-degree angle and make the sport of drifting look like child’s play. The speeds are high, the crashes are big and the rewards are a mere pittance when compared to the purses doled out to drivers in other, more high profile series. However to the racers that compete in these series that means little compared to the actual thrill of the race. Click through for the video and prepare to enjoy some of the highlights from the 2011 Oval Nationals.

Ken Block goes fishing… Dirt fishing that is.

Dirt Fish Rally School

It’s good to see that gymkhana guru Ken Block understands that he still needs improvement when it comes to open road and WRC style rallying. I mean there is no question that the guys got some serious skills, but I think he may have bitten off a little more than he could chew when he first entered WRC. This is why I’m finding it pretty cool that he went to Snoqualmie Falls, WA and the Dirt Fish Rally School to get in a little practice in his HVHF Ford Fiesta. Now, for those that don’t know, Snoqualmie Falls, Washington is the same place that the TV series Twin Peaks was filmed back in the early 90′s. Even though it was a good show, it unfortunately didn’t make it past 2 seasons. Regardless though, watching Block slide his Fiesta around a dirt course in the same place the TV series was filmed is just as entertaining as it’s always been.

Drag Race: Bugatti Veyron vs. Nissan GT-R

Bugatti Veyron VS Nissan GT-R

The Nissan GT-R is one of those rare cars that has the ability to put the hurt on just about any super car out there. They make big power, are ungodly fast and have the ability to make even the most mundane driver look like a rock star behind the wheel. Now just imagine that you’re a GT-R owner at your favorite drag strip for a test and tune night. On any other day you’d pull up to the lights, watch the tree and at the end of the 1,320 you’d become the evenings champion. This however is not that night. You see tonight there’s a guy next to you with an even bigger gun. Sure it cost over 10 times as much, but at days end, there’s a reason. Enter the 1,000 + hp Bugatti Veyron, a car that’s just as comfortable cruising at 75 mph as it is maxing out at over 250 mph. The GT-R however is no slouch, in fact when you see the results of this run you may in fact be asking yourself what would happen if Nissan built a $1-million super car. Click through for the video and enjoy.

Vintage Racing at Australia’s Bad-Ass Bathurst Raceway…

Vintage Racing at Bathurst

There’s just nothing quite like the sound of thundering V8′s ripping around a race track. Sure turbo-4′s and well-tuned V6′s sound ok, but bang for the buck, gimme a horsepower thumping push-rod V8 any day of the week. This video was shot down at Australia’s Bathurst Raceway as part of their Touring Car Masters road race. Vintage Chevrolet Camaro’s, Holdens, Ford Mustang’s can be seen doing battle in what some would consider the best kind of racing out there. This was no exhibition race either, as all of the drivers were wringing the snot out of their rides. Remember, these are 40-year old muscle cars that are clad with leaf springs out back and carburetor-ed V8′s up front, yet by the performance they’re displaying you’d never know it. Click through for the video and get ready to enjoy 15-mins of the best fender to fender vintage road racing that you’re ever likely to see.
