The 1979 Pontiac Trans Am, the Lamborghini Countach and the 1969 Dodge Daytona. Three cars that exhibit characters that are completely outlandish for any automobile of any era. The Trans Am for example, with its big screaming chicken on the hood and t-topped roof is reminiscent of the 1970′s disco scene. The Countach simply screams “I LOVE COCAINE” and the Dodge Daytona, well that was a car designed to go fast when go fast technology didn’t even exist. My point is this; you can still, if you have the means go out and pick-up any one of these cars and drive them all the time.

However would their loud, outlandish style prohibit you from driving them? I mean lets face it, pulling up to the grocery store in a Countach may seem great at first until everyone around you simply labels you as a complete douche.

When Lamborghini announced that their new supercar, the Aventador was going to put some serious hurt on the competition, they weren’t kidding. I mean getting a car to a top speed of 217 mph is one thing, but having it accelerate to 60 mph in under 3-seconds? Well, that’s just crazy talk. This however is Lamborghini, the makers of the ridiculous, therefore it comes as no surprise that their performance claims on the new Aventador seem to be true. I remember when back in the day a top speed of 150 mph was fast, and getting to 60 mph in 7 seconds was pretty good. Nowadays though and uncorked Honda Accord can achieve those speeds. But I digress… Autocar Magazine over in the UK was a bit skeptical of the claims that Lamborghini was making, so they decided to have a little test. Granted, it wasn’t official, but when you’ve got access to a Porsche GT2 RS, Lamborghini Aventador and a Mercedes-Benz SLS, who really cares?

“Made in China”. That’s a sentence that is unfortunately seen on most of the goods we have over here in the United States. As Americans, we see that, sigh, and then drop our heads wishing that we produced all of our own goods and services. Apparently though that phrase is paying off big time for the Chinese as they’ve got a car club over there that rivals just about anything I’ve ever seen stateside. Pagani, Ferrari, Bugatti, Koenissegg, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porsche and Mercedes-Benz are all present and accounted for and hot damn if these guys don’t drive the piss out of them as well. Stored in a warehouse somewhere in China, the value of these automobiles together rivals the yearly economy of some small countries. So, next time you see a label that reads “Made in China”, don’t worry because it’s helping keep our favorite super car companies in business.

If there was one car out there that could have the distinction of being the worlds first automotive porn star, then the Lamborghini Countach would be it. If you were a kid growing up in the 1980′s then the Countach was what you dreamed about at night. It was bold, sexy and at days end, had just the right amount of raunchiness to make you think impure thoughts. Originally developed during the disco era, the Countach didn’t really come into its own until the mid-80′s when cocaine and high end porn were in style. It was ungodly fast for its day, completely devoid of creature comforts and would definitely kill you if given the chance. Simply put, it was wonderful. Time however has not been overly kind to the Countach though. Sure it still looks good, but where cars like the Lamborghini Muira will always be elegant and proud, the Countach comes across like the old chain wearing bald guy at the end of the bar.

For some of us, myself included, the Countach will always be the definition of what I think of as a supercar. For some reason though I think I’d be hesitant to meet it in person, as some things need to be left up on your childhood wall.

It has the look of a stealth fighter, hyper-car performance and an aura that has the ability to create fantasies. It is the Lamborghini Reventón and it is, without a doubt, one of the greatest cars produced in the last two decades. Recently The Media Merchants, a technology driven production agency out of Canada, got their hands on one of the 20 Lamborghini Reventón’s produced between 2009-2010 and created a projection based visual experience the likes of which we’ve never seen before. The use of sound and projection combined with the angular shape of the Reventón not only peaks our imagination but helps us see things in a very different light.

It used to be that back in the day one had three simple goals. First was to go to college, second was to get a white collar job making boat loads of cash, and third was to make it to the mark whereby you would receive a cheap gold watch for your years of hard work and service. For most people the thought of staying in one place for their entire career is frightening, however if your name is Valentino Balboni, well then, your job may have just turned out to be the stuff that dreams are made of. Balboni, Lamborghini’s chief test driver up until 2008, had the job that every adolescent men the world over dreamed of. Instead of a gold watch at retirement though, Lamborghini decided to honor him in a different way, you see they built a car dedicated solely to him. This is the Lamborghini Gallardo LP550-2 Valentino Balboni, and even though it’s two years old at this point, it doesn’t change the fact the both the car and the man are nothing short of spectacular.

There are certain things out there that will retain their beauty forever. They are the pinnacle of design and will be referenced as such throughout history. In the automotive world there is one car that not only combines style, elegance and grace, but shear performance and beauty. I speak of course about the Lamborghini Miura. Now some people may argue that I am incorrect, but I think that deep down in their souls they too believe that the Miura is the King. I recently stumbled across this video of this stunning example that was being shot by Tim Andrew for Octane Magazine’s 100th issue. From its sound, to its flawless lines, this car is and always will be awe inspiring.

Lamborghini doesn’t toss us the keys to its latest cars, and in fact the Italian automaker doesn’t even have press fleet cars in the Southeast U.S.. Still, if they did, and if we had the chance to drop the hammer on an Aventador, we’d never say, “wish us luck.” If you need luck to drive a car in a straight line at top speed, you’re in the wrong line of work.

It doesn’t share any parts with any of its siblings. It’s powered by a 700 bhp naturally aspirated V12, and it’s one of the most technologically advanced road cars ever built. The Lamborghini Aventador was not built to be just another super car, but moreover, it was built to redefine what the super car is. With major competition from the likes of the Ferrari 599 Fiorano, McLaren’s MP4-12C and the Lexus LF-A, Lamborghini had no choice but to pull out all the stops for their newest bull. Where the Murciélago overcame any deficiencies it may have had with brute force, the Aventador employs technology to aid their owners in the driving experience. EVO Magazine recently had a chance to flog the new Lambo at the Vallelunga Circuit in Italy and came away with a much different opinion of what a V12 Lamborghini can now do on a racetrack.

Just in case you’re not up to speed on Lamborghini’s current lineup, here’s the two minute drill: there’s the Gallardo, available in six different variants, and then there’s the Aventador. Named for a fighting bull known for its strength and resilience, the Aventador replaces the Murcielago atop the Lamborghini product line.

Powered by a 6.5-liter V-12 sending 700 horsepower to all four wheels, the Aventador is capable of running from 0 to 62 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds, on the way to a top speed of 217 miles per hour. It’s chock full of F1 technology, including a carbon fiber composite monocoque, pushrod suspension and a paddle-shift gearbox that can execute gear changes in 50 milliseconds.

Unlike earlier Lambo V-12s, the Aventador can out-handle a surprising number of cars on a tight race track. On the Top Gear test track, the Aventador turned in the third quickest lap time of 1:16.5, which means that only the new McLaren MP4-12C and the Ariel Atom V8 500 are faster.
