Downhill City Mountain Bike Racing: Fun, Insane Or Both?

I’m going with a bit of both. It looks like an absolute blast, but it also looks like you’ve got zero margin for error. I seriously doubt I would have stuck that second landing, and the ensuing crash probably would have put me through someone’s roof. The helmet cam view is cool, but to be avoided if you’re prone to motion sickness.

Cyglo Tyres can turn your road bike into a glowing light cycle, providing maximum visibility at night while fulfilling your Tron fantasies. The recently patented tires have LEDs embedded in their sidewalls, giving night cyclists a flashy profile that’ll help them avoid unwanted vehicular contact. The lights are powered by the circular motion of the wheels themselves, negating the need for batteries. Extremely slick. And safe. End of line.

Woman Sues Google Maps For Bad Walking Directions

Caution: don't walk here.

Just in case you were unsure if common sense were dead or just on life support, a story in the NY Daily News confirms the worst: common sense is dead. Lauren Rosenberg is suing Google, alleging that their Google Maps application for mobile devices did not contain a warning on walking routes. Rosenberg was struck by a car and injured while walking between two addresses, some three miles apart, in Park City, Utah. The reason? Google Maps didn’t warn Rosenberg that the route lacked sidewalks, forcing her to walk on a state highway.

Would You Jump From A Balloon At 120,000 Feet?

Because I certainly wouldn’t, which is what sets us apart from Felix Baumgartner. The accomplished parachutist has BASE jumped from the Petronas Towers and flown across the English Channel using a specially designed wing parachute. If things go as planned this summer, he’ll ride a Red Bull sponsored balloon to a height of 23 miles over the New Mexico desert, then he’ll simply step out into the void. His goal is to break both the record for the highest parachute jump and to break the sound barrier during his descent. Without any aircraft, dressed only in a pressurized and heated suit.

Cop Car Really Does Have Cop Motor

Think municipal budgets are tight over here? From the looks of this photo, they’re even worse on the other side of the pond, where police in Hampshire, England have apparently been forced to embrace pedal cars for patrol.

Actually, the pedal car was built for the British Pedal Car Grand Prix, which the Hampshire Constabulary hope to win this July 11. The car was a joint venture between police and local school students, who spent some 40 hours turning wrenches on the unsafe-at-any-speed-looking contraption. It cost over $1,400 to build, which came as surprise since I can see about $50 worth of scrap metal in the picture. Maybe it’s got a carbon fiber monocoque and baby whale penis upholstery.

Unpowered Hoonage: Gravity Racing Now Illegal In Los Angeles County

Watch this video, then tell me that gravity racing doesn’t look like a blast. You could build a car for next to nothing and enjoy hours of non-polluting, wheel to wheel racing (with the occasional broken bone or two), for the cost of gas to and from a hill. Leave it to California to ban it; if it’s entertaining, it should be outlawed in the land of fruits and nuts.

I’d build a sled in solidarity for my oppressed California brothers, but we don’t have any hills in Florida. Maybe I’ll just go buy a shifter kart so I can terrorize the neighborhood instead.

NASCAR Meets The Winter Olympics

The USA broke a 62 year old gold medal drought in men’s bobsled when it took the four man bobsled gold in Vancouver. The driving skills (and sheer mass) of Steve Holcomb were essential to the team’s victory, as was the sled built by Bo-Dyn Bobsleds. While you may not have heard of Bo-Dyn Bobsleds, you’ve probably heard of one of its owners, NASCAR racer Geoff Bodine.
