Morgan Roll at Silverstone

Convertibles are wonderful machines. They let you feel the wind in your hair, are amazing on a 70-degree evening when the moon is out and give you the feeling of freedom as your cruising down the highway. However, when it comes to racing let’s just say that drop-tops have no place there. A perfect example of why they shouldn’t race was seen a few weeks ago at the Silverstone Classic in Northamptonshire, England when a Morgan Roadster driven by Luther Blissett took a tumble. Blissett walked away unharmed thanks to his roll-cage but you can bet next time he’ll think twice about running that open-air Morgan on the track. Click through for the video.

Missed Wörthersee? No Worries, We’ve Got You Covered

Posted in Audi, Automotive Event, Videos, Volkswagen by Kurt Ernst | June 18th, 2011 | Leave a Reply |

Nothing makes women hotter than an alligator skin Audi with scissor doors...

If you’re a VW or Audi fan, chances are you’ve heard of Wörthersee. It’s a lake in southern Austria, but it’s also home to the largest annual gathering of VW and Audi fans in the world. It’s best described as “Sturgis meet Sprockets”, if you get the reference to the old Saturday Night Live skit with Mike Myers. Picture thousands of heavily drinking Germans, Austrians and other Euros, turning their collective freak knobs up to 12, and you get the picture. It’s fun for families, too!

VW and Audi typically roll out some impressive new cars and concepts at the event, and this year was no exception. VW launched their 35th anniversary GTI, which comes loaded and packs 235 horsepower instead of 200. Audi rolled out their A1 clubsport quattro concept, and we salivated. Who wouldn’t jones over a car the size of a shopping cart, with 500 horsepower and quattro AWD? Don’t expect to see it in showrooms any time soon, but just knowing it exists is good enough for me. Enjoy the video below. Read More…

Carlisle Import and Kit Nationals 2011

Triumph TR4 and TR3

BCW MG TD Replica
Recently, I attended the Carlisle Import and Kit Nationals show at the Carlisle Fairgrounds in Pennsylvania. Held every May, this show features a vast array of meticulously maintained classic British, European and Japanese cars, exemplary examples of their more modern kin, as well as a beautiful collection of kit cars.  As far as sheer variety in makes, models and years, hands down, this show can’t be beat.

This has become something of an annual treat for me as I can think of few better ways to spend a weekend than by gazing at a gleaming sea of jaw-droppingly stunning automobiles, many of which I guarantee you won’t find at other shows. Plus, participation is open to anyone with an import or a kit car – all you have to do is register, make your car pretty and show up. It’s a great opportunity to display your cherished ride and meet other aficionados of your favorite marques.

I used to come down to show my Saab and hang out with the Saab contingent that makes it out every year. But even though I have a Subaru now, it’s just so much fun that I continue to make the trip to Carlisle (my WRX was parked over by the lone DeLorean, if you happened to be there). Volvo, BMW and Audi clubs also traditionally have a large showing so the weekend is packed with the cars you love, cars you haven’t seen before, your friends from the forums, barbeques – it’s a good time for everyone.  So, if you’re not too far out from Pennsylvania, I definitely recommend heading out there next May to check out the Carlisle Import and Kit Nationals. To tide you over, provided for your viewing pleasure are some of my favorite cars of the weekend. Enjoy!

Best In Show At Amelia Island

The Mormon Meteor, a 1935 Duesenberg SJ Speedster

This year’s Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance honored Duesenberg as their featured marque. Allard and Kurtis were also honored, but it’s virtually impossible to win “best of show” awards when you’re competing against Duesenberg. When you invite Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance winning cars to the party, it should be no surprise when they take the ribbons in Florida as well. Such was the case in this year’s show, where a 1935 Duesenberg SJ Speedster, nicknamed the “Mormon Meteor” took top honors in the Concours De Sport class, with a 1933 Duesenberg SJN Arlington Torpedo Sedan taking top honors in the Concours De Elegance class. Chevys wait for the sun to hit the horizon.

There aren’t many good reasons to drag your ass out of bed at 4:45 AM on a Sunday morning (3:45 AM when you factor in the switch to Daylight Savings Time), but seeing some of the worlds finest cars up close and personal has to be one of them. This was my fourth year at the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, and it never ceases to amaze me how the event’s founder, Bill Warner, manages to up the ante each and every year with better cars, better seminars and more of your childhood racing heroes. He’s got an in with God, too, since the weather is always sunny with blue skies and not the slightest chance of rain. Maybe running the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash back in ’75 was the secret to eternally good karma. Who knew? Read More…

Car and Driver Goes Buck-Wild with VIR Lightning Laps

* LL1 Class 1

Car and Driver magazine has been pumping out high quality automotive material since 1955. They test everything from budget minded automobiles to high-end super cars to bring us some great opinions and test results. Over the past 5 years Car and Driver has started a tradition called the “Lightning Lap Roundup” in which they take the best cars from different price brackets and pit them in a head to head competition to see who comes out on top. Price points range from $0-$30,000, $30k-$60k, $60,000-$120,000, $120k-$240k and $240k and up. From the standpoint of a performance enthusiast this test is gold, as it helps performance minded guys like myself go forth and hopefully make the right decision about which car to purchase next. Personally, I’ve got my eye set on a 2011 Ford Mustang GT. I’ll take a silver one with the Brembo brake package, a 6-speed and 3:73 gears. These video’s are not only well done, but great fun to watch, so click play and enjoy.

Vehicular Highlights of 2010: Ridelust Style.

Ridelust End of Year

Over the past year both Kurt and myself have done our best to bring you guys the best that the automotive world has to offer. We’ve attended shows, reviewed loads of cars and have even managed to have a little fun along the way. The best part about what we do though are the emails, comments and feedback that we receive from our readers. For instance, if for some reason we stumble, we know damn well that you guys are going to nail us to the wall for it. Same goes if we have strong opinions about certain subject matters or if we throw some humor your way. Our goal is to make Ridelust.com a place where you guys can come, hangout and enjoy everything that the mechanized world has to offer and for 2011 I promise that it’s only going to get better. Below is quick listing of 5 of my favorite highlights from 2010… enjoy.

Ford To Teardown F-150 ‘Hero Engine’ At NAIAS

You have to give Ford credit for having huevoes mas grande: it’s one thing to prove a point about the durability of your twin-turbo V6 EcoBoost engine, but it’s something else entirely to tear it down in public. Who knows what dirty little secrets lie within the engine’s heads and cylinders walls? Do you really want to run the risk of encountering a burned valve or scored cylinder walls in front of John Q. Public? If you’re Ford and the motor in question is EcoBoost V6, serial number 448AA, the answer is, “yes, at Ford’s powertrain display at the NAIAS, on January 15th at 11:00 a.m.” It’s enough to make me wish I were going to this year’s North American International Auto Show.

Want To Buy A 2011 VW Jetta For $5,995?

The 2011 VW Jetta SEL, not one of the Gilt sale cars.

I’ve driven the 2011 VW Jetta sedan, and I have to say it was a nice car for the money. If you had the chance to buy one, brand new, for $5,995 instead of the usual starting price of $15,995, that would be one hell of a good deal. Just in time for Christmas, a few lucky shoppers will have the opportunity to buy a brand new Jetta for the price of a high mileage used car. The catch, since there always is one, is twofold: first, you have to join the website Gilt, which offers luxury products at insider prices to members. As far as I can tell, there’s no cost to join, but you do need to set up an account in advance. The second catch is quantity: there will only be three 2011 VW Jettas available at this price.
