Smart Car Dakar 2013

If there is one car on the market that I would absolutely never recommend to anyone, it’s the Smart Car. They’re horribly underpowered, give one of the worst rides in the history of the automobile and have a transmission that’s so bad that I wouldn’t use it as a boat anchor for fear of offending the boat. That’s why when I saw this pitch for the Dakar 2013 Smart Feber Buggy, I had to chuckle. Driver Jose Luis Alvarez is currently campaigning for funds so he can race what is basically a Yamaha Razor (with a Smart body) in the 2013 Dakar rally “Buggy Light” class. We wish him well on his quest to complete the entire race unassisted, however we can’t help but think he should’ve started off with a better platform.

Nasser Al-Attiyah VW Dakar Rally

Car class champion Nasser Al-Attiyah

For the third year in a row, Volkswagen claimed top honors at the 2011 Dakar Rally, which wrapped up this weekend. In fact, the turbo-diesel Race Touareg 3 utterly dominated the car class of the rally, giving VW the podium for the second time since last year’s victory in the Touareg 2.

The winner, Qatari driver, Nasser Al-Attiyah, became the first Arab driver to win the Dakar Rally. Al-Attiyah is currently a driver for the Barwa Rally Team in the Production World Rally Championship, and was the 2006 PWRC champion in a Subaru WRX STi. He finished second overall in the 2010 Dakar Rally to VW teammate and WRC champion, Spaniard Carlos Sainz, by a nail-biting two minutes and twelve seconds.  Sainz was off to a strong start early in the 2011 race, but his car suffered mechanical problems which hurt his chances at the title. Sainz finished third overall in the car class. Read More…

Carlos Sainz 2011 Dakar Rally Volkswagen Touareg

Carlos Sainz

3,100 miles of brutal off-road racing across mountains, dunes and through desert canyons just cannot be easy for anyone, even celebrated Spanish WRC champion Carlos Sainz. But despite the terrain and mechanical issues, Sainz, the 2010 Dakar Champion, scored a victory on Monday, taking the second stage of the 2011 Dakar Rally in his 310 hp Volkswagen Race Touareg 3 with a finishing time of 3:11:28. In second place for the car class was his VW teammate, Qatari Nasser Al-Attiyah, who finished the stage in 3:12:31. The champion of numerous Dakar Rallies (both in the motorcycle and car classes), Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel, took third in his BMW X3 CC with a time of 3:13:02.  Overall, Sainz leads the car class, with Peterhansel in second and Al-Attiyah in third place.
