Electric Drill Powered Trike EX

Electric vehicles seem to be all the rage these days with just about every automobile manufacturer jumping on the bandwagon. Although the batteries still aren’t quite perfected, that hasn’t stopped them from moving forward and pushing the boundaries of today’s technology. Cars like the Tesla Roadster, Nissan Leaf and Chevrolet Volt have paved the way for future automobiles, but what about other transportation. For instance, how about a three-wheeled trike that’s powered by two cordless electric drills – interesting right? Built by Hamburg based designer Nils Ferber, this electric trike is powered by two 18-volt-screwdrivers that can accelerate its driver up to 30 km/h or 18 mph. The driver literally lays atop the contraption and steers by use of a specially developed joint that tilts the back wheel when the driver shifts their body weight into a corner. Throttle and brake controls are located on front mounted stalks that sit mere inches above the front wheels.

Custom Wheels: What you need to know!

Proformance Wheels

It seems like just about every car on the road today has a set of aftermarket wheels. Some look fantastic, while others are just nightmares. A good set of wheels can change the look and feel of your ride, increase performance and enhance it’s value, but this is if, and only if they are chosen correctly. Over the years wheel and tire sizes have increase dramatically. For instance, back in the 1960′s most cars came stock with 14-inch wheels and hubcaps, the 70′s went to larger 15-inch wheels and then in the 1980′s we saw the emergence of 16-incher’s. It wasn’t until the 1990′s though when the aftermarket wheel scene really took off. All of a sudden we had 17, 18 and 19-inch wheels and then in the first part of the new millennium we saw the introduction of the DUB or 20-inch wheel. I remember when I first saw a 20-inch wheel on a car and was like, what the f*ck was that! Back then it wasn’t all that common, but today they’re all over the place. For those who are uneducated in the process, there are few elements when buying wheels that you really need to look at. First you need to define the application for which the wheels are going to be used, second is to determine your fitment parameters and lastly you need to pick out a style that suits your ride.

Bring Back the Custom Van!

Custom Vans

Back in the 1970′s there was this crazy trend to do up custom vans. They came shod with shag carpet, painted murals, full bars, comfy mattresses and of course the prerequisite side pipes. Some people looked at the van trend simply as creepy, but me, I actually dug it. Listen, there is nothing inherently cool about a bone stock cargo van, but dress it up a little and give it some creature comforts and well, that’s a different story. The custom vans of the 1970′s and early 1980′s went from mild to downright absurd. Thousands upon thousands of dollars were spent on customizing and like any custom project, they were never, ever done. Back then enthusiasts would hold “truck-ins” or “van-ins” to display their creations and let me tell you, the interiors were just as important as the exteriors.

Glasgow Kiss: One Bad-Ass Bobber.

I’ve never been huge into custom choppers, in fact I think most of the ones out there roaming the streets are completely hideous. Gaudy paint jobs and mass amounts of chrome generally ruin what are otherwise beautiful cruising machines. Sometimes however a bright spot shows up and when that happens I feel that I must bring it to everyone’s attention. This drop dead stunner is called the “Glasgow Kiss” and it was crafted by one Robbie Kerr, owner of Kootenay Motorcycle Art in Canada. The inspiration for this mad machine came from Robbie’s love of the 1945 Harley Davidson Flathead. His goal was to craft a new age interpretation of that machine complete with a unique feel and modern performance.

Ridelust Oddity: 1975 Ferrari 365GTB/4 Shooting Brake

Ferrari 365 Shooting Brake

The Ferrari 365 GTB/4 is to this day one of the most recognizable Ferrari’s ever created and was produced from 1968 to 1973. Made famous by movies like the Gumball 3000 and television shows like Miami Vice, the Ferrari GTB/4 (or Daytona) has also been permanently embedded in pop culture. The car held to a traditional front engine rear drive layout with a 352 hp V12 up front that was mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. Top speed was over 170 mph with a 0-60 mph time of around 5.4 seconds. For some it’s the ultimate GT car and for others, it’s simply the car from that cop show in the 1980′s. Whatever the case, there is no denying that the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 is one of the most beautifully sculpted Ferrari’s ever crafted.

GWA Ciento Once Prototype

Back in 1969 at the Frankfurt International Motor Show, Mercedes-Benz came out with a concept car that was simply jaw dropping. Called the C111, the car was an experimental coupe that pushed the boundaries of both design and engineering. It utilized a slippery wedge shape, gull-wing doors and was powered not by a traditional V8 engine, but a Wankel Rotary that produced 280 hp. This was good enough to rocket the car to a top speed of over 160 mph and from 0-60 mph in about 5-seconds. Alas the C111 was never meant to be, as Mercedes-Benz only utilized the car as a study for future technologies such as glass-fiber-reinforced plastics and aerodynamics.

Marcos cars are madness. All have plywood chassis modeled after the De Havilland Mosquito fighter. Most run Ford engines and various Triumph suspension bits. They are lightweight, fast, and devastating on the track.  This is the fastest, most mental Marcos ever made. It’s the Mantis XP, a mid-engine monster powered by a 700-horsepower BRM-Repco V8 and styled by the brilliant Adams Brothers.

Ridelust Recap: Dustin’s Favorite Cars of 2010

2010 was a good year. The venerable Lancia Stratos came back from the grave. Jaguar built a car with two jet engines in it. The Mustang shaved its mullet and proved itself as a more-than-capable sports tourer. Chevy’s long-awaited Volt turned out to be pretty good. And Cadillac made the most bitchin’ station wagon ever. But my favorite cars this year didn’t make the glossy magazines. They won’t end up in posters plastered to 15-year-olds’ walls. They won’t be featured in Forza or GT5. They are, however, spectacular in every way imaginable. Here they are, in no particular order.

You’re Doing it Wrong: F-Body Custom.

At some point I think that we’ve all felt that we possess the talent to design our own car. Some of us truly have that ability, while others, like this guy, obviously don’t. What people sometimes fail to understand is that automakers spend millions upon millions of dollars to create automobiles that are not only pleasing to look at, but perform as well. There are those however who still feel the need to push the boundaries of amateur design in the hopes that they stumble upon a diamond in the rough. What you are seeing here though is a piece of coal that should have been tossed into a furnace as opposed to a nice shiny diamond.
