Automatic Transmission

There are certain things in the universe that will always remain a mystery to all but the smartest of individuals. Things like black holes, figuring out what women want, and of course, how to fold a fitted sheet. In fact those guys can go fuck themselves. Taking it down one notch from the aforementioned top 3 is the automatic transmission, or more appropriately, how it works. The following two videos take us through, in layman’s terms, how these marvels of engineering help to get us around on a day-to-day basis.

Gibbs Quad Ski

For years engineers have been trying to devise one vehicle that is as equally at home on land as it is on the water. Many have tried, but few have succeeded. The Amphicar, developed in 1961 was a decent try, but the fact that any overzealous wave would swamp it, made it somewhat impractical. Enter now the Gibbs Quad Ski, a vehicle that combines the off-road capabilities of a quad, with the fun and excitement of a personal watercraft. Power comes from a BMW sourced 1300cc engine that gives the Quad Ski a top speed of 45 mph on both land and sea. The only downside… The $40,000 price tag that goes along with it. Check it out after the jump!

AMMO NYC

Open the engine compartment of any new car and the chances of you actually seeing the engine are slim-to-none. Today’s engines are generally encased in multiple plastic covers and shrouds, which unfortunately for the motor-head in all of us, conceals all the good bits. It’s nice that older cars have everything out in the open, however that doesn’t mean that this old way of thinking is entirely without consequence. For instance, pop the hood on an old Cobra and you’ll see everything an old engine has to offer. The downside to everything being exposed however is that now, all parts are out in the open and are subject to engine leaks, weather and anything else you, or Mother Nature can throw at them. Larry Kosilla, founder of AMMONYC.com is thankfully here to instruct us on how to properly clean our old engine bays without damaging a thing. Check it out after the jump.

Carburetor

If you were born after 1985 then the odds of you ever seeing a real life carburetor are probably pretty slim. I mean let’s face it, even though fuel-injection was available in the late 60’s it wasn’t really implemented until the mid-1980’s. For those of you out there however who feel the need to know how this little piece of old school technology actually works, fear not, because this video explains everything you need to know about your friend and mine, the carburetor.
