DRIVE Clean

For some people the thought of buying a used car can be a harrowing ordeal. There are dishonest owners, unscrupulous dealers and cars that have been trashed or abused their entire lives. Larry Kosilla’s DRIVE CLEAN recently debuted its second season on Youtube’s /DRIVE Network, and the first episode deals with exactly this. Kosilla goes through a step-by-step process in regards to not only what you should look for, but how you should get a used car checked out (pre-purchase inspection – PPI) before you actually purchase it.

This is going to be one of the most helpful videos ever posted and something I know you guys will enjoy.

Open the engine compartment of any new car and the chances of you actually seeing the engine are slim-to-none. Today’s engines are generally encased in multiple plastic covers and shrouds, which unfortunately for the motor-head in all of us, conceals all the good bits. It’s nice that older cars have everything out in the open, however that doesn’t mean that this old way of thinking is entirely without consequence. For instance, pop the hood on an old Cobra and you’ll see everything an old engine has to offer. The downside to everything being exposed however is that now, all parts are out in the open and are subject to engine leaks, weather and anything else you, or Mother Nature can throw at them. Larry Kosilla, founder of AMMONYC.com is thankfully here to instruct us on how to properly clean our old engine bays without damaging a thing. Check it out after the jump.

SRT Body And Soul

If you were to ask the adolescents of today which they’d rather have, a new car or a smartphone, you may be surprised at the answer you’d get. As a kid, I distinctly remember that the only thing I wanted was my drivers license. SRT’s new advertising campaign gives us all, young and old, a little shot in the arm and reminds us that, even though technology is a wonderful thing, it’s nothing if it doesn’t stir the body and soul.

Drunk Driving

It can take only a second for your life to go from great, to complete ruins. One minute you’re cruising along and everything is fine, then POOF! It’s all gone. THINK! is the Department of Transport’s dedicated road safety division in the UK and their new ad campaign is shockingly brilliant. These are the types of ads we should be running here in the United States, instead though we’re stuck with bullshit, non-shocking ads that wouldn’t convince a drunk to drink light beer. This is definitely one you want to check out!

Carburetor

If you were born after 1985 then the odds of you ever seeing a real life carburetor are probably pretty slim. I mean let’s face it, even though fuel-injection was available in the late 60’s it wasn’t really implemented until the mid-1980’s. For those of you out there however who feel the need to know how this little piece of old school technology actually works, fear not, because this video explains everything you need to know about your friend and mine, the carburetor.

5 Emergency Items Every Motorist Should Have

Image:

It dawned on me recently as I was driving along in the middle of nowhere California that most drivers aren’t properly prepared for those “Oh SHIT!” moments. Therefore I’ve decided to make a quick list of things that you should never be without, and it applies to all drivers, regardless of your daily distance traveled.

1. Cell Phone: These little devices are generally the first line of defense when you’re stranded out there on the open road. They give you comfort, provide you with the contact and emergency information of those that can help, and give you the ability to call on #2 on the list. Oh… and don’t forget to keep your cell charger in the car at all times.

Speeding

Let’s be honest, if you drive a car on a regular basis then the odds of you speeding are pretty good. Be it 5 mph or 25 mph over the legal limit, speeding is speeding, and in case you didn’t know, that means you’re breaking the law. However most law enforcement agents tend to look the other way if you’re not abusing the limits. For instance, if the speed limit is 55 mph, it’s not uncommon to see motorists cruising at 65 mph – I mean we all do it right? Csaba Csere, contributing editor for Car and Driver magazine understands this and has put together a little video that tells how not to break the law, but simply circumnavigate it a bit.

Lament for Fisker

Fisker Karma041

It seems Fisker is finally succumbing to the relentless seas of misfortune. It’s been battered by storms, supplier problems and financial troubles. Founder Henrik Fisker has fled. Its workforce has been laid off. Nearly all of them. Things are grim. But should petrol-guzzling, tire-burning, fire-breathing gear heads like you care? Yes. Yes, you should.

You should care about Fisker for one simple reason: It’s disruptive. The automotive industry is big, old and stagnant. It moves at a glacial pace and changes very little. Fisker, and other new car companies, are free to innovate, to explore new technology, and to do crazy things like use a turbocharged Pontiac Solstice engine just to spin a generator.
