My first bike was a Ninja 250R, damn I loved that thing. I gotta say though, I highly recommend springing for a brand new one - buying a used motorcycle is MUCH different than buying a used car. With a used car, you've got at least an 80% chance of finding one that hasn't been in a single accident. With motorcycles, it doesn't matter if you're Jimmie Guthrie, everybody lays down their bike at least once. If you buy used, there's a pretty strong chance that bike has already done some pavement time.

The 1971 Yamaha Enduro 175 (series CT1C) or Enduro 250 (series DT1E) are also good starter motorcycles. Admittedly, they're a little harder to find.

Expect to pay about $1,525 for the former in very good condition, and about $1,950 for the latter in similar condition.
