The BMW GS (short for “Gelaende Strasse”, or field and street) range of motorcycles turns 30 years old in 2010, and BMW is commemorating this with a range of special edition GS bikes. Originally, the GS came in a single flavor, as an air cooled 800cc boxer-motored twin dubbed the R80GS. BMW GS motorcycles have seen numerous victories in the grueling Paris – Dakar Rally, and remain the platform of choice for long distance adventure touring. The number of models in the GS range, however, has steadily increased to meet consumer demand.
Topping the range is the R1200 GS Adventure, the direct descendent of the 1980 R80GS. BMW also sells the slightly less beefy R1200 GS, which uses the same motor but offers a more pavement-tuned suspension; the F800 GS, with a parallel twin motor and the the F650 GS, also with a parallel twin. Special edition models will be finished in Alpine White paint, with special BMW Motorrad Motorsport decals. To honor the 1980 bikes, all models will feature a red upholstered seat, a one time trademark of the off-road bikes from Berlin. Special badging and bundled options will also be used to designate the limited edition motorcycles. Pricing has not yet been released, but expect the models to hit BMW Motorcycle dealers in late June.
