Own a Harley? Let’s See Some Pictures…

Posted in Harley Davidson, History, Motorcycle by Vito Rispo | May 8th, 2009 | 1 Response |

Harley

Harley-Davidson is creating a photo mosaic for their 2010 Catalog, and in order to do it, they need at least 10,000 photos of actual Harley owners with their bikes by Friday, May 15th. So if you have a hog, here’s your chance to get yourself into a little bit of Harley history.

We’d like to see them too, especially if you have an XR1200 (we’re partial to the Eurostyle bikes around here). So post your pictures in the comments and send them to Harley-Davidson.

Cool Shizz of the Day: The FilterGlove

I used to work at an auto salvage yard, and we would attempt to save all the waste oil we could and pour it into a waste oil burner to heat the garage in the winter. Basically, any wasted oil was wasted money.

Invariably, when you’re changing an oil filter, you’re going to spill at least some oil. And even if it’s a fairly negligible amount, you’re still dripping it on your garage floor and getting it all over your hands. No longer, dear Ridelust-ers…

Solution: The FilterGlove. A plastic cup with notches. Freaking brilliant. I love when simple things solve problems.

Borsalino Makes Helmets Now

I’ve been trying to bring back the fedora look for years, until the hipster culture co-opted it. Now I have a closet of class Borsalino hats that I can’t wear outside unless I want to be hounded by zombie hipsters in ironic t-shirts asking me which thrift store I bought the hat from.

Anyway, Borsalino. In addition to the high end hats they’re known for, they make helmets now too. I guess they’re trying to get into the same “style helmet” niche that Les Ateliers Ruby caters to. Expensive leather, high end materials, and the throwback classy look. Read on for some pictures:

My birthday’s coming up this month, on the 18th of May. One day before that, on the 17th, the 3rd annual ‘Ferrari Leggenda e Passione‘ is being held on the Ferrari factory grounds in Maranello, Italy. Happy coincidence, right? This is a great opportunity for all my well wishers to fly over to “Il Belpaese” and pick me up something classy to drive around on the weekends.

There will be exactly 37 of the most perfect automobiles ever made at that auction, 34 Ferrari’s and 3 Maserati’s, and I’ll gladly accept any one of them. But to be completely honest, I do have my eye on one in particular… the 1967 Ferrari 330 P4. There were only three original 330 P4′s ever made, and this is one of them. Read on:

Road Rage in the Parking Lot of Walmart: ‘Ornery B’ Don’t Take No Backtalk

Posted in Bizarre, Newsworthy, Parking, Roads, Safety, Scandal by Vito Rispo | May 4th, 2009 | 1 Response |

oldie

Sixty-seven year old Charlie Bruener and his wife Donna were driving down US-27 in Alexandria, Kentucky, when they say they were cut off by 82 year old Beecher Davis. Unfortunately for the Bruener’s, they would soon find out that Mr. Davis is the most ornery old man in the great state of Kentucky.

According to the Charlie Bruener, Mr. Davis followed them down US-27 until they pulled over in a Walmart parking lot, at which point Mrs. Bruener called 911. Mr. Davis then revealed his well earned title of “Most Ornery Octogenarian in Kentucky” by getting out of his van and approaching the Bruener’s car huffing and puffing mightily.

Concept Cars: The 2009 Gullwing-America 300 SL Panamericana

300 SL Panamericana - Front

Automobiles don’t look like they used to. Granted, modern cars perform better, last longer, and have a few points shaved off their drag coefficient; but in too many cases, they’ve sacrificed aesthetic appeal for those things. Don’t get me wrong, if I could have only one, I’d choose substance over style… but ideally I’d want both.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could take a 1966 Maserati Ghibli and make it perform like a 2009 Maserati MC12; or a 1968 Corvette drive like a 2009 ZR1; a 1966 Lamborghini Miura zip like a Gallardo; a Nissan 240Z go-go like a Nissan GT-R; or an original Jaguar E-Type drive like, well, anything but a modern Jaguar. You get the picture. Old style combined with modern quality components, that’s the dream, and that’s exactly the point of the 2009 Gullwing-America 300 SL Panamericana. Engineer Arturo Alonso is the man behind the concept and his idea is to create a near perfect replica of the original Mercedes 300 SL using 100% modern technology.

Ridelust Caption Contest: The Invisible Skoda Art Car

Posted in Bizarre, Car Stunts, Newsworthy, Pictures, Used Cars by Vito Rispo | May 4th, 2009 | 6 Responses |

inviscar

It took British art student Sara Watson three weeks to paint the urban camouflage you see above. Of course, this car is only invisible when it’s sitting in that one spot, and viewed from that one particular direction (a la the Stereoscopic Parking Garage from way back when). Still, it’s an impressive sight.

An auto salvage and recycling company donated the car, a Skoda Fabia, and now has it’s company name (Recycling Lives) subtly written across the top of the windshield. Given the amount of press and local attention this old scrap Skoda is getting, it seems like a pretty good return on their investment.

Usually the caption contests are just a picture with scant description, but this one seems like it could be good. Do it to it in the comments.

1976 Ducati 900 Desmo Super Sport: David Cronenberg’s ‘The Italian Machine’

While C’était un Rendez-Vous may be my favorite 8 minute French film, David Cronenberg’s The Italian Machine is my favorite 30 minute Canadian film. The center of the film’s attention: a 1976 Ducati 900 Desmo Super Sport.

The plot basics: Some Canadian bike enthusiasts find out that a bizarre local art collector has bought a Ducati 900 Super Sport with the intention of keeping it for display only, in his living room. Obviously, this upsets the enthusiasts, one of them almost to the point of frenzy. So they come up with a scheme to liberate the 900SS from it’s freak warden.

It’s short, awkward in some spots, and a little bit absurd as it shows motorcycle enthusiasts as some sort of hardcore cult, but it’s still a great flick if you’re into bikes. And here it is in it’s entirety:

Pastor beaten and tasered by Border Patrol agents at an ‘Internal US Checkpoint’ for refusing a search

or Terrorists have infiltrated the US Border Patrol

checkpoint

Driving is getting to be a very dangerous activity in these United States. Remember this post? The one where I told you about how 2/3rds of US population now lives in a “Constitution-free” zone where Border Patrol agents can search your vehicle without consent and for any reason they so desire if you’re within 100 miles of the US border. You guys remember that one?

Remember how that means that the top 10 largest metropolitan areas in the US are completely inside the Constitution-Free Zone? And more than 12 states are totally within the zone: Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Vermont? And in California, 99.73% of all residents are living in the Constitution-Free Zone?

Well, you may have thought: “That doesn’t apply to me” or “What could they possibly do to me? Arrest me? For what, driving around doing nothing? This can’t really be happening, this is just blown out of proportion. What can they really do to me?”

Apparently, this is what they can do to you:
