They Write About Cars, We Write About Them!

I’m on a mission. I want to get a subscription to a car magazine, but I don’t know which one to get. I asked friends, but got a different answer from each one. So, I decided to just get an issue or two of each and read them. Then, based on what I read and the subscription price, I would decide on one. So you, my faithful readers, will get to benefit from all of my hard reading.

The British Mags

What would have happened if the Beatles had never broken up? Would they have survived Lennon’s death? What would it be like if they were still touring today? Would they have different personalities, yet be very much the same? Would they have a reality TV show?

Just like a mythical modern day Beatles, the British magazines are in some ways different, and in many ways very much the same. Read More…

Automobile

Automobile was started in 1986, making it the youngest of the US car magazines. Started by David E. Davis and a handful of Car and Driver (read our Car and Driver review here) defectors, Automobile is more focused on the automotive lifestyle than just cars themselves. They do reviews, but not all of their articles are about cars, which can be disappointing. What isn’t disappointing is the photography which is easily the best of all the magazines we’ve reviewed. Road & Track

Reading through all these magazines has taught me something. It has taught me that each magazine, because of the people behind it, has its own personality. I can’t put down one then head straight on to the next one. I have to wait a day or a week between magazines to let the feelings I had for the last one dissipate. Time, like a cracker to a wine taster, cleanses my pallet.

I should have let more time go by before picking up Road & Track (R&T). Read More…

Jensen Button, driver for F1 team BrawnGP, has put his Veyron up for sale. He’s asking nearly $1.48 million. It’s slightly used with 1,500 miles. Apparently, Button doesn’t have room for the 1,001-hp, 253 mph engineering marvel in his garage. It is crowded in there with a BMW M5, Mercedes C63 AMG, Ferrari Enzo, and Audi RS6 Avant. Read More…

Car and Driver

Based near Motown in Ann Arbor, MI is Car and Driver. Car and Driver – or C/D as we in the biz call it – first started in the mid-fifties with a focus on imported sports cars, however this quickly changed so the magazine could appeal to a more broad audience. Long known as the home of some serious gearhead writing talent, such as Brock Yates, Pat Bedard, and David E. Davis, Jr., Car and Driver offered an excellent mix of serious auto journalism, technical articles, and quirky, off-beat fun. Read More…

Motor Trend

One of the oldest and most revered of the buff books, Motor Trend started in 1949. Known mostly for its Car and Truck of the Year awards, this is probably the most influential North American car magazine. Car companies, desperate for good press on their products, are willing to do whatever it takes to get Motor Trend to like their cars and trucks. I would not be surprised if Angus Mackenzie, Arthur St. Antoine, and Matt Stone were given their choice of booth “professionals” at every Detroit Auto Show or Geneva Auto Salon. Read More…

While our esteemed Editor-in-Chief, Suzanne Denbow, is out perusing the NY Auto Show and cooking up some of her famous spaghetti for the Ferrari folks, we received a call at RideLust headquarters with an anonymous tip that Ford has offered GM’s Board of Directors a take over of the General Motors brands for an undisclosed amount. Since our fair-haired Editor-in-Chief is doing real work we decided that, accuracy-be-damned, we better get this out even though it has not been confirmed and is quite possibly a hoax.

The Denver Post is reporting that a woman’s request for a license plate was rejected because some could interpret it to mean naughty things. The license plate would have read “ILVTOFU”, which Kelley Coffman-Lee swears was meant to read “I Love Tofu”. Sure, whatever you want to say to make yourself feel better.

No word on what kind of car our alleged vegan needed this plate for, but we imagine it to be a Volkswagen New Beetle with a sorority sticker on the back. Read More…
