The top gas guzzlers of the 2007 model year read like a veritable who’s who of high end automotive performance. In fact the top seven gas guzzlers of the year are all high performance cars – not a Hummer or SUV in sight. That’s not to say, of course, that the behemoth from GM has suddenly become a green icon. The gas guzzler list for 2007 merely reflects the fact that as horsepower goes up fuel economy generally heads in the other direction.

Of course the price tags of the top seven gas guzzlers on our 2007 list indicate the fuel costs are not the primary considerations of the owners of these fine tuned machines. After all, those who can afford a Lamborghini, a Ferrari or a Bentley are unlikely to fret over the high cost of gasoline.

Those of us with more pedestrian tastes and more limited fuel economy may need to take a hard look at the true cost of our wheels, but for now sit back and take a look at the gas guzzling ways of these high end cars.

7. Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder

Lamborghini starts off our list with the powerful Gallardo Spyder. While Lamborghini owners may not worry about the cost of fuel, the rest of us may be interested to know that this machine is rated at just 17 mpg on the highway and only 11 in the city.

6. Bentley Arnage

Bentleys are known for being pricy automobiles, and the high cost does not stop after these finely tuned machines have been driven out of the showroom. With a mileage rating of just 16 mpg on the highway and 11 in town, the Bentley Arnage will continue to prove costly when it pulls into the local service station.

5. Bentley Azure

The Bentley nameplate appears once more, this time with the Azure. This well designed machine may be fun to look at, but not fun to fuel. A gallon of fuel will power this fine machine for just 16 miles on the highway and only 11 through the city streets.

4. Lamborghini Murcielago (automatic)

The sports cars hailing from Italy have been on many top lists when it comes to selling price and high end speed but Lamborghini appears again on this gas guzzler list with the Murcielago. This sexy car consumes gas at 16 mpg on the highway and 10 in the city.

3. Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

With two supercars already on this list, you probably expect Ferrari to make an appearance. The 612 Scaglietti is the first Ferrari entry with a scant 16 mpg on the freeway and just 9 in the city.

2. Ferrari 599 GTB

Here is another Ferrari. The 599 GTB has better city mpg than the 612 Scaglietti with 10 mpg. However, it is worse on the highway with only 14 mpg. Of course Ferrari owners are not known for fretting about fuel costs.

1. Lamborghini Murcielago (standard)

While the automatic transmission version of the Murcielago is 4th on this list of 2007 gas guzzlers, the standard version tops the list for the worst fuel economy. This powerful beast manages a paltry 14 mpg on the highway, and an even more paltry 9 mpg when cruising through the city.
