1979 French Grand Prix

Anytime you hear people talking about race car drivers from yesteryear you always hear terms like “toughness”, “skill” and “real men”. Sure the technology has advanced but at the end of the day, regardless of the time period or what there were driving, race car drivers live to compete. This video is of the 1979 French Grand Prix and shows us one of the greatest battles in Formula One history between Gilles Villeneuve in a Renault, and Rene Arnoux in a Ferrari. The video is narrated by none other than Jeremy Clarkson who seems to think that the drivers of today simply don’t posses the same amount of drive as those from days gone by. I tend to disagree, but that didn’t stop the final laps of the 1979 French Grand Prix from being one of the most exciting finishes in history.

What has always impressed me about that video is that they are battling for SECOND! Very cool. I’m currently reading a biography of Villeneuve by Gerald Donaldson and you easily sum up the driving style and personality of Gilles by simply watching those final three laps. Additionally, how awesome is it to watch a 1.5L Turbo vs a Ferrari Flat 12!?
