Tragedy struck yesterday during the California 200 off-road race when one of the racing trucks lost control while going over a jump. In an event that seems surreal, 8 people were killed and another 12 injured. David Conklin, a photographer covering the event said, “There was dust everywhere, people screaming, people running”. The California 200 is a sanctioned off-road race, but like so many others, due to the nature of the event there are no real barriers between the course and spectators. The cause of the crash is currently being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Land Management and the California Highway Patrol.
