I’ll admit to having a serious jones for the Porsche Boxster S. It’s got about the ideal blend of horsepower, handling and style, and if there were one or two more zeros on the end of my bank balance, I’d probably have one in the garage right now. I’ve also got a thing for black cars and motorcycles, mainly because anything looks at least 10% more sinister in black. Enter the latest special edition from Porsche, the Boxster S Black Edition, and you’ll understand why my keyboard is now covered in saliva. Like one of Pavlov’s dogs, I simply can’t resist the subliminal response generated by the combination of Porsche+Boxster S+Black Edition.

Lest you think that the Boxster S Black Edition is just a trim package, think again. The 3.4 liter flat six engine gets a boost to 320 horsepower, the same as the limited edition Boxster Spyder and ten more than a conventional Boxster S. The car also gets dual black chrome exhausts, black 19” Boxster Spyder wheels, black side intake grilles, a “Black Edition” logo top and side sills and a SportDesign steering wheel. Porsche will only build 987 Black Edition Boxster S models, so if you want one you’d best get on the phone to your Porsche dealer quickly. Pricing starts at $65,200 for a manual transmission Boxster S Black Edition, and jumps to $68,860 if you opt for Porsche’s PDK gearbox. In either case, that’s a fair price to pay for a well equipped Boxster S, so kudos to Porsche for not gouging on price.
