When I was a kid I used to work at this shop in the local mall that sold sunglasses. It wasn’t overly exciting but it provided me with enough pocket change to go play on the weekends. It also introduced me to the different kinds of glass and plastic lenses that were used. One manufacturer had a lens that was photochromic, which basically means that the lens had the ability to darken upon exposure to UV radiation. That brings us to the upcoming 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK and its panoramic roof. By utilizing what Mercedes calls, “magic sky control”, the SLK’s new roof will have the ability to turn from light to dark. Now I can’t say for sure if the glass used is actually photochromic, but quite honestly, I can’t see it being anything else.
Aside from its funky new roof the new SLK also gets a newly redesigned V6 engine that makes 302 hp, as well as new aluminum front fenders and hood. Styling influences from the new Mercedes-Benz SLS and SL can also be seen. Honestly, I have no idea if the new glass roof will help boost sales of the new SLK, but as a marketing ploy it ranks pretty high up there.
