It’s official: BMW will build the M version of the 135 coupe seen strafing the Nurburgring in numerous spy shots and videos. Dr, Kay Segler, BMW’s managing director, confirmed that the spiritual successor to the 2002 Turbo will begin production in 2011, probably as a 2012 model. The official name is still up in the air, but it won’t be called the M1, since that belongs to the BMW sports car built between 1978 and 1981. Dr. Segler referred to the new model as the 135 M, so chances are good that name will stick.
The 135 M should make between 330 and 350 horsepower, a noticeable improvement over the 135’s 300 horsepower. The M version will see suspension and brake upgrades, and will most likely wear wider rubber as indicated by the fender flares on the test mule. Pricing has yet to be established, but a well optioned 135i can hit $45,000, so expect a base price in the area of $50k or so.
