Remember when 450 hp in a car was unheard of? No… well, then you’re a very lucky person because it wasn’t too long ago that that number was reserved for cars with high 6-figure price tags. Take the iconic Ferrari F40 for example, back when it was released in 1987 it put out a then astonishing 471 hp from it’s twin-turbo V8 and was priced at around $400,000. Back then this was the pinnacle of what a super car was and by all accounts the motoring press didn’t think it would ever be topped. Nowadays though you can run out to your local Cadillac dealer and order up a car like the CTS-V, a four door sedan that makes 556 hp and more torque than the Ferrari could ever dream of.
We are living in the golden age of the automobile and in this age there are two cars that have been battling it out for the title of “Fastest Production Car in the World”. The Bugatti Veyron set the standard back in 2005 by producing 1,001 hp and a top speed of 253 mph. Then the American SSC Ultimate Aero showed up and took the title by running 257 mph, but then Bugatti got pissed and ran 267 mph in the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, bla, bla, bla…
Now instead of just giving the standard Ultimate Aero more power to catch Bugatti, SSC has simply decided to build an entirely new car. The 2011 Ultimate Aero II pumps out an astonishing 1,350 horses from its 6.8-liter twin-turbocharged V8 which will hopefully propel the car to a targeted top speed of 275 mph. SSC has done everything they can think of to lighten the new car as much as possible. The body for example is made from carbon fiber and aluminum, with the wheels being carbon fiber as well.
The body is unbelievably slick and looks to be more aircraft than automobile, which is good when your trying to hit almost 300 mph in a street legal production car. The Ultimate Aero II has put a lot of pressure on itself to get the title back from Bugatti next year and with a curb weight of only 2,600 lbs and an engine that makes the aforementioned 1,350 hp we have no doubt the title will be back on American soil in no time.
