When you first look at the new 2011 Hennessey Venom GT there are a few styling cues that you may have seen before. This is because some of the cars components are actually based on those of a Lotus Elise. The doors, roof, floor, dash and windshield are in fact taken directly from the little Lotus, that is also however where the similarities end. You see Hennessey Performance just released the full spec list on their new 2011 Venom GT super car and saying that they are simply just “super” would be the understatement of the year. You see the Venom GT is powered by a Chevrolet LS-series based twin-turbo 6.2-liter V8 that produces a staggering 1,200 hp and 1,135 lb-ft torque. People, you could pull the moon out of orbit with that much power.
Power is transmitted to the rear wheels by way of a Ricardo six-speed manual transmission. The final drive ratio is 3.36 which means that Hennessey Performance figures the top speed is somewhere around 260 mph. At first you may want to balk at that number but before you do consider this. The Bugatti Veyron has 1,001 hp but weighs in at a chubb-chubb weight of 4486 lbs. The Venom GT tips the scales at a svelte 2,685 lbs. which is over 1,800 lbs less than the Veyron! Another thing to consider is the price as the Veyron costs upwards of 1 million dollars. So for $600,000-$800,000 the Venom GT seems like a downright bargain.
Hennessey Performance will only be producing 10 Venom GT’s per year with the first one already spoken for by a gentleman in the Middle East. What we need now though is one big drag race between the Bugatti Veyron, the Shelby Super Cars SSC and the new Hennessey Venom GT. Hmm… maybe we can get Top Gear to do a test with the Stig, Jezza and the Hamster behind the wheel. Now that would be something I would pay to watch.
