2011 Ford Explorer: The Countdown Begins

Ford will unveil the 2011 Explorer next Monday, July 26, and we’ll be on hand to see it up close and personal. I’m not sure if we’ll get a stint behind the wheel at the introduction, but we promise lots of pics and details by next Tuesday. Just in case you can’t wait for more information on the 2011 Explorer, here’s another tidbit: according to Ford, fuel mileage on the EcoBoost four cylinder will be some 30% better than that of a current Explorer equipped with a 4.0 liter V6.

A rear wheel drive 2010 Explorer with the V6 gets 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway, for a combined fuel economy of 16 mpg. Add 30% to those numbers, and the 2011 EcoBoost Explorer should see 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 20 mpg combined. There’s no word yet on towing capacity or load rating for the EcoBoost Explorer, but keep in mind that the new vehicle sheds its ladder frame for a unibody layout. It will be lighter, which should help with how much it can haul and carry.
