The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has awarded the Hyundai Genesis sedan (models built after January, 2010) and the Mercedes Benz E class sedan (built after March 2010) a “Top Safety Pick” award for 2010. The cars join other Top Safety Pick award winners in the Large Car segment, including the Buick LaCrosse, the Ford Taurus, the Lincoln MKS and the Volvo S80.
To win a Top Safety Pick award, a vehicle must achieve good ratings in four separate IIHS tests, including the 40 mph frontal offset crash test, the side crash test, the rollover test and the rear crash protection test. The vehicle must also come equipped with Electronic Stability Control.
The rollover test is new for 2010, which is why the Hyundai Genesis and Mercedes Benz E class did not initially qualify. Hyundai made changes to the roof structure on Genesis sedans built after January, 2010, and the Mercedes E class has been redesigned for the 2010 model year.
