Yesterday on ABC’s newest episode of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Matt and Blasia Drumm of Fayetteville, Pennsylvania received an expected surprise when Ford generously gifted them a brand new 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid. Doting parents to a brood of four, two of the Drumm’s children were born with special needs, leading both Matt and Blasia to quit their respective full time jobs and find work that allowed them to devote the necessary time to their children. Although successful in freeing up time to care for their children, the part-time jobs Matt and Blasia accepted significantly reduced the couple’s income. Struggling financially, Matt and Blasia were ultimately forced to sell the family vehicle and rely on the benevolence of family members instead. Lacking a vehicle, Matt and Blasia found it difficult to make the 400+ mile trek to visit their eldest son, Ben, enrolled in a military academy in Virginia. “My mother-in-law’s van was not a new vehicle, and it would cost us anywhere from $60 to $80 to go and see our son,” Blasia explained. “The van had a lot of miles on it, and it really ate up gas.”

Now that the drums have a new, fuel-efficient vehicle in their garage, however, the burden of struggling to provide for a special-needs family will be greatly alleviated. “I was so excited to just have a vehicle and not have to worry about trying to figure out how we were going to get from one place to another,” said Blasia. “And to have a new car that’s so fuel efficient just takes a lot of worry off of us because we travel so much to doctor’s appointments and to see my son at school.”
