2010 BMW 7-Series “M-sport”: Weak Sauce

Everyone who knows anything about those fine Bavarian sportscars with the roundel on the hood knows that if your car sports an M-badge, it’s usually backed up by a seriously good motor and a lot of tweaking. That is, unless you’re either a poser who shaved your 318i and slapped a M3 logo on, or this distressing styling package from our Bayerische friends. Take a regular 7-Series, add “unique styling accessories” like new front and rear bumpers, more chrome, and … wait for it … M-Design wheels, and you get this.

What’s missing? Why, what about the hand-built 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 from the new X6M? It makes a healthy 550 HP, up 150 from the normal 750i and close to what the 760Li puts out. But instead of that lovely motor, you get the normal 7-series offerings … AND you get a new steering wheel and a lot of aluminum dash trim! What’s not to like? Honestly, if you have the cash to spend on a 7-Series and you like the aesthetic differences, there’s no harm nor foul in getting this. It’s not like the extra cash is more than a drop in the bucket. But this hurts fans awaiting news of a M7 … keep the faith!
