2 Big Ambulances for the Fattest State in the Nation.

There are some things in this world that simply do not surprise me. Take the chubby-chub State of Mississippi for example, a place where 33.6% of the population is considered obese. The people here love their hamburgers, fried chicken and lard souffle, so much so in fact that Jackson, Mississippi felt the need for a few “special” ambulances and equipment to help cope with some of their larger patients. American Medical Response for Central Mississippi Operations, Jim Pollard states that,

“We are seeing more large patients.” “Those have particular needs and deserve to be accommodated.”

Ambulance

Because AMR transports obese patients on a daily basis, the need arose to obtain larger stretchers to accommodate them. A standard stretcher for example can support up to a 500 lb. person and costs about $3,300 per unit. The new units however can hold up to an 850 lb. person (I didn’t even know we had those) but cost a whopping $6,200. What I find amazing is that there are actually enough 500 + pounders out there that a need for something like this exists. Here’s an idea… how about instead of buying stretchers to accommodate these folks, we develop plans to help them loose the weight. Might just be a better idea, don’t ya’ think?

Plus, they’re probably going to need the ambulances more than if they were in shape.
