Back in the mid-1980’s, before the days of the hyper cars like the Bugatti Veyron and SSC Ultimate Aero, super cars like the 1987 Porsche 959 and 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO ruled the roost. Both were iconic in their own way with each bringing something completely different to the table. The Porsche 959 for example came equipped with four-wheel drive and a twin-turbo flat-6 producing 450 hp, an astonishing amount of power for that time. It had wonderful fit and finish and was a technological masterpiece. When first released it was met with mixed reviews due to its flared bodywork, uber wide stance and lofty asking price of $225,000 – that’s $420,000 in today’s market! There was however no denying that the Porsche was, and still is a force to be reckoned with.
The 1985 Ferrari 288 GTO hit the streets sporting a mid-mounted 400 hp twin-turbo V8 and had something that the Porsche could never hope to achieve… you see it had soul. From a production standpoint the Ferrari was crude compared to the Porsche, but the noise, beauty and sheer emotion that it evoked from the public gave it top honors in almost every automotive circle. Today these cars are considered to be some of the most beautiful Ferrari’s ever crafted as they possess the perfect combination of performance and style and are highly sought after by collectors.
