It was Chrysler’s turn yesterday, today GM is finalizing plans to ditch 1,100, or nearly 18%, of its dealerships nationwide. GM says it is deep-sixing the underperforming dealers in this round, weeding out ones with low sales volumes or poor profitability.
Dealers are clearly on edge. And despite the joke-y nature of this post, in some ways this is a real human tragedy for those people involved. We just want to take a moment out to say we’re conscious of the human element here. It makes us even more upset that the General has brought itself so low.
When will this go down? The letters are apparently heading out, and the franchises expire in October of 2010. Maybe by then the Chevy Volt will have saved GM from extinction and they’ll take it all back. We can only hope.
